Intended audience:

This class is designed for people who are required by their employer to have a certification card. There is a higher risk of coming into contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials associated with certain occupations. This list includes but is not limited to healthcare workers; public safety personnel; housekeeping and custodial workers; educational and correctional workers; designated first aid providers and child care providers.

Description:

Bloodborne pathogens include, but are not limited to, Hepatitis B Virus (HBV), Hepatitis C Virus (HBC) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Bloodborne pathogens are bacteria and viruses found in the blood and other body fluids of an infected person.

Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) requires that this training be provided on an annual basis to employees with occupational exposure. This is a video-driven class. Participants are encouraged to ask questions. Skills demonstrations are tailored for the audience. A written exam may be given as required by the employer. Bloodborne Pathogens may be combined with Heartsaver First Aid or Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid or ASHI Basic First Aid.

Student materials: Student Handbook will be provided during class

Student to instructor ratio: 10:1

Class fee: $25.00 - $75.00 depending on components included

Approximate class length: 1-2 hours without First Aid

Written exam may be required depending on state and local regulations.

Certification cards are issued the day of the class and are good for one year.

 

The American Heart Association strongly promotes knowledge and proficiency in BLS, ACLS, and PALS and has developed instructional materials for this purpose.
